My Top-10 Wisconsin Sports Moments of 2011

10.) Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly lead after Day 1 of the PGA Championship (August 10th)

It didn’t last long but it was fun while it lasted. After day 1 of the 2011 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club, a pair of Wisconsinites topped the leaderboard. Jerry Kelly fired a 5-under 65 to sit in second. In first after round 1 was Steve Stricker who tied a PGA record by shooting 63 at a Major Championship. In fact, Stricker just missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have made him the first ever to shoot 62 at a Major. Stricker finished the event tied for 12th while Kelly was tied for 26th.

9.) Russell Wilson chooses Wisconsin (June 27th)
This is more about what Wilson meant to the season than anything. Wisconsin found themselves on the National map this season and Wilson was a big reason. If it wasn’t for a Hail Mary and a busted coverage, Wisconsin could be playing in the National Title Game. Yes, a painful reminder of what could have been, but it was definitely a fun ride!

8.) UW Green Bay Women advance to the Sweet 16 (March 22nd)
The Lady Phoenix became the first D1 Women’s team in Wisconsin to make it to the Sweet 16 when they defeated Michigan State in Round 2 of the Women’s NCAA Tournament 65-56. Phoenix eventually loss to Baylor 86-76 but still grand accomplishment!

7.) Ryan Braun wins the NL MVP
I know it has been a whirl-wind last few weeks for him but Braun did something that had Brewer fans feeling good about a sour end to the year. Braun became the 3rd Brewer (Robin Yount and Rollie Fingers) to win the MVP award.

6.) Packers start 13-0, win 19th straight overall
I don’t think the magnitude of the accomplishment will be felt until the season is over but the start the Packers had was unbelievable. On top of that, their 19-straight wins dating back to Week 16 last season, going through the playoffs and to this year was the second longest streak in NFL History. The Packers earned that win with a 46-16 domination of the Oakland Raiders.

5.) UW Whitewater wins their 3-straight D3 Title (Dec. 16th)
Whitewater’s dominance on the football field continued in 2011 as the Warhawks won their 3rd straight National Title with a 13-10 win over Mt. Union. The win was also the 45th in a row for Whitewater who hasn’t lost since the 2008 title game when they were defeated by Mt. Union.

4.) Wisconsin wins the first ever Big Ten Title Game (Dec. 3rd)
As much as some want to call it a consolation prize, the accomplishment of the Rose Bowl is one worth celebrating. The Badgers, in dramatic fashion, avenged a loss with Michigan State by taking out the Spartans 42-39 in the first ever Big Ten Title Game. The win sent Wisconsin to their second straight Rose Bowl and second ever BCS Bowl Game. The win also helped RB Montee Ball get to New York as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

3.) Milwaukee Brewers win their first division title since 1982 (Sept 23rd)
It was one of those nights as a sports fan you will remember for as long as you will be alive. From the drama of Ryan Braun’s go ahead home run to waiting for the Chicago Cubs to beat the St. Louis Cardinals to eliminate the magic number. Unfortunately for me, I had tickets to the game the next day.

2.) Milwaukee Brewers advance to the National Championship Series (October 7th)
The emotions of the series were intense. The Brewers got out to a 2-0 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park only to drop the next two on the road forcing a game 7 back in Milwaukee. In game 5, the Brewers went to the 9th inning with a 2-1 lead only to see John Axford notch a rare blown save. However, the Brewers magic came back alive in the 10th when Carlos Gomez scored on the game winner by Nyjer Morgan. The Brewers were back in the in Championship Series for the first time since 1982.

1.) Packers win Super Bowl XLV 31-25 over the Pittsburgh Steelers
Anytime you win a Championship, you catapult to the top. The Packers capped off an improbable playoff run in Dallas for the teams 4th Super Bowl Title in January. After Week 13’s loss in Detroit, the Packers looked prime to collapse without their QB during a trip to New England and needing help elsewhere around the league. After winning their final two weeks and getting the needed help, they went to Philly, Atlanta and Chicago and earned wins over the top 3 seeds in the NFC. In the Super Bowl, the Packers took care of Pittsburgh to win the title.

Weekend Wrap Up!

1.) Packers defeat the San Diego Chargers 45-38
This may have been the most interesting game of the season. For one thing, Aaron Rodgers continued his astonishing play with 4-more TD passes with a 145.8 QB Rating. The Packers are also out to an 8-0 start and remain the lone unbeaten team in the NFL...BUT, if you turned on talk radio you would think the Packers just lost and were now 3-5 on the season...I GET IT! They have flaws! Great! Their pass defense has been suspect and their pass rush non-existent. Why does everyone feel the need to criticize EVERYTHING that goes on? Instead of blasting something and missing out; enjoy something that could be special! Last year, fans spent SOOOOOOOOOOOO much time BITCHING about EVERYTHING! The next thing you knew, they won it all and people were caught off guard. WATCH AND ENJOY!

SERIOUSLY, for as painful the losses were...the Badgers don't lose games they SHOULD win. It says a lot about Bielema and this program.

As for my Big Ten Picks:
Nebraska did not beat Northwestern but Michigan State (barely), Ohio State (barely as I predicted) and Iowa all won!

4.) Lenny Dykstra no shows on Jose Canseco...Say's he never agreed to the fight. Good thing I did not spend the $19.99 to order it!

1.) Green Bay Packers over the San Diego Chargers 34-24
When the season began I had this as a loss for the Green Bay Packers; after Monday night I just can't do it. San Diego has looked inconsistent and is so injury laden I don't see a way the Packers drop this one. Aaron Rodgers and his offense is well rested while the defense has all the motivation from the doubters the last two weeks. Packers win this one easily with the score looking closer than the game due to a late score or two.

1.) Today we start with the biggest surprise of the month! Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month! WOW! Shocking!!! Rodgers completed over 71% of his passes for 1455 yards, 12 TDs and 2 picks (that were off the hands of his receivers). Rodgers joins Barry Sanders as the only players to receive this honor 3-consecutive months. Vikings DE Jared Allen was the defensive player of the month while Devin Hester of the Bears received the Special Teams Honors.

2.) Speaking of hardware, Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder notched Silver Slugger Awards yesterday as the best hitters at their positions in the National League. For Braun, it was his 4th straight making him the first to do so since Barry Bonds won 5-straight from 2000 to 2004. As for Fielder, it was his second award with his first coming in 2007.

One other Brewers note is that Cory Provus has been hired as the #1 Radio Broadcaster for the Minnesota Twins.

3.) Apparently, Detroit hates Nickelback as much as everyone else! My suggestions for who should play:

2.) Tonight at 11:01 CST (the only timezone that matters) MLB Free Agency begins! Teams will open up their pocket books for the services of Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, Jose Reyes and hundreds other! As for the Milwaukee Brewers, the big names will more than likely not be in their cards though who knows considering what happened last offseason. Here is my free agent forecast:

Positions of Need
#1: Shortstop - After the Yuniesky Betancourt era came to an end this week with the Brewers not picking up his option, the Brewers will need to get an everyday guy to fill the gap between 2nd and 3rd. Defense will hopefully be a key attribute
#2: Bullpen - Last year, the Brewers had one of the best in baseball the 2nd half of the season. I expect the Brewers to build their pen the same way this year.
#3: First Base - Some may put it higher on the need list but with Mat Gamel coming up and probably getting a shot at it I don't foresee a splash.
#4: Utility Infielder - Craig Counsell and Jerry Hariston Jr. have filled this void over the past few years; I expect to see Hariston come back or Melvin go after someone else.

4-REALISTIC Names to stir the pot:
#1: SS Rafael Furcal - after watching him destroy the Brewers down the stretch and in the post season; get him in Milwaukee!
#2: RP Joe Nathan - the Brewers brought in K-Rod last year to set up for Axford; Nathan could be a nice replacement
#3: 1B/OF Josh Willingham - of course this would be if they give/gave up on Gamel. Good power numbers could replace the Fielder void in the line-up
#4 INF Aaron Hill - Has played all infield positions (mostly 2nd but has played short and 3rd in the past) and was a huge boost to Arizona. Defense is stellar! He could be a starter at short if not the utility guy

3.) And as always, when the top 2 SEC teams play in the regular season, the bash the BCS propaganda begins. Here's a look from Fox Sports. In tribute to that, here is how a tournament would look at the moment!

4.) It's day 2 of the NBA (No Basketball Anymore)...To make up for my loss, I am going to pay tribute to something in sports that is not in existence anymore.

Today I pay tribute to the One Bar Facemask. It was banned by the NFL in 2004 though players already using it were grandfathered in. Former Punter Scott Player was the last to wear one back in 2008.

After too long of a lay off (and questions everywhere I go why I don't do it any more) the Nickel returns! Each day I give you 5-things I am thinking or talking about. Let's get to it...

1.) It was back to work Monday for the Green Bay Packers after last week's bye week. At 7-0, the Packers are the lone unbeaten in the NFL and in the driver seat for home field in the NFC. Have the Packers been as perfect as the record indicates? Obviously not. HOWEVER, the NFL has been so mediocre, Green Bay looks like world beaters. In an average NFL, the Packers have been the most consistent team and have handled (for the most part) everyone they have played.

As for those detractors looking at the Packers schedules, look at some of the wins of the so-called "bad teams" the Packers beat...

Denver - beat Cincinnati (5-2)
Chicago - beat Tampa Bay (4-3), Atlanta (4-3)
Atlanta - beat Philly (4-3), Detroit (5-2)
Carolina - beat Washington (3-4)
Rams - beat New Orleans (4-3)

Green Bay hasn't taken a week off unlikely everyone else in the league has!

2.) A couple other note for the Packers:
- RB Alex Green was placed on IR Monday and former Ohio State RB Brandon Saine was called up from the practice squad. #NextGuyIn
- Aaron Rodgers and his receivers will grace the cover of Sports Illustrated...

3.) How bleak does the season look for the Wisconsin Badgers? Maybe not as bad as it seems. Despite losing their last two games to Michigan State and Ohio State, many believe the Badgers can (and will) represent the Leaders Division in the Big Ten Title Game AND get to the Rose Bowl. Badgers Blogger with JS Online, Dave Heller, takes a look at some Expert Bowl Projections today.

I am going to have to use College Hoops to make up for my loss of the NBA. Good thing the two are looking more and more similar (overall, not in Madison) every year!

By the way, Jordan Taylor received some preseason love Monday by being named an AP Preseason All-American. Taylor joins Michael Finley as the only Badgers to receive the preseason honor.

Closet the Ball and Glove for the Playoffs

I want to start out this piece by saying, as a Brewers fan, how much I love the Ball-and-Glove Brewers logo that Milwaukee wore from 1978 to 1993. Its fun to pop on the TV or head to a game and seeing the team celebrate their history by going retro! I own a jersey and a hat from this era myself, but for the next few weeks the logo needs to take a brief hiatus as it is time to celebrate the the 2011 team!

I say this because the 2011 Brewers team needs to have their own identity. The 2011 Milwaukee Brewers have set a franchise record for wins with 96. They also won the NL Central Title, the franchise's first Division Crown since 1982. This year's team needs to be celebrated and allowed to be themselves.

As a life long Brewer fan, I would encourage Brewer fans heading to the games this Post Season to wear the current team logo out of respect. I love the old logo, it's better than the current one in my opinion, but now is not the time for it. Allow this team take on their own identity as they make a run in the post season. Its about 2011 now and this team deserves their just due! This would be a great way to give it to them.

THE CONTENDERS
#1 - Green Bay Packers: To be the champs you must beat the champs
#2 - Pittsburgh Steelers: Pretty much everyone is back for the Super Bowl runner-ups
#3 - New England Patriots: Out of all the Boston pro teams, the Patriots have the longest championship drought
#4 - Baltiomre Ravens: This is the year that Flacco takes the next step
#5 - New Orleans Saints: Packers lost in the first round of the 2009 playoffs and won it all the next year

ALMOST THERE
#6 - Atlanta Falcons: Focused on offense this season and Matt Ryan will become elite because of it
#7 - San Diego Chargers: They have to win the Super Bowl sometime...right?
#8 - New York Jets: If the offense catches up to the defense, Rex Ryan may finally accurately predict his team's fate

PLAYOFFS SHOULD BE IN FOCUS
#9 - Philadelphia Eagles: What do high school fans chant after a big win? OVERRATED!
#10 - Houston Texans: See predictions 2006 through 2010 (could this be the year?)
#11 - St. Louis Rams: Potentially the "Greatest Show on Turf Part 2"...defense remains a question
#12 - Detroit Lions: Sexy means nothing until its proven...or healthy

Closer Doesn't Start with "K" but Kudos Does...

The Milwaukee Brewers bolstered their bullpen late Tuesday night when they acquired RP Francisco Rodriguez and cash considerations from the New York Mets for Two Players to be Named Later...Before assessing the trade, here are 5-things you need to know about the deal...

#1 K-Rod's Contract
If Rodriguez closes 21-more games, the Brewers will automatically be on the hook for $17.5 million for next year. This was a built in option in the deal he signed with the Mets a few years back. The Brewers HAVE to be cautious of this because they can not afford to take that on OR really would want too.

#2 John Axford is still the Closer
Axford has converted 20-straight saves and has been VERY consistent in a Brewers bullpen that has been searching for just that. Even if he has a couple blunders through the next couple of months, the Brewers financially will be forced to stick with Axford (SEE Above).

#3 Kameron Loe and Marco Estrada will still see innings
Loe is still a "decent" option to toss into a game in the 7th inning or other BIG situations. His role obviously changes with the trade but this doesn't spell the end of him. Estrada is still the innings eater of the pen. Remember, the Brewers were essentially one guy short in relief when they called up Mat Gamel to be a DH/PH the last few weeks so Loe and Estrada will still see the bump.

#4 Cash Considerations and Players to be Named...
The extras in the deal need to be known. The cash considerations the Brewers receive are $5 million; Rodriguez has $4.9 million(ish) left on this year's deal. Players to be name later doesn't mean throw away guys. Likely, the players will be based on performance and impact of K-Rod. I expect Gamel and one of the Crew's young arms in the system to be named later but probably, (as usual) I will be wrong.

#5 Prince Fielder is GONE!
I know Milwaukee has stayed away from the "all-in" phrase for this year but this deal proves that even more! The fact the Milwaukee has gone from one of the top farm systems in baseball to the bottom over the years fits this mentality (and yes, their top prospects have come up but their system was still stacked!). Obtaining Zack Greinke for four-guys that projected in the line-up in the near future was the start and this just keeps that train moving. K-Rod falls in line. If you haven't already, imagine this line-up without Fielder. That is next year's offense. Doug Melvin and the Milwaukee's front office understand their time is now!

Like every trade, free agent signing, and draft pick; it's a good move if it works! Do I like this trade? On the surface its hard not too. It helps Milwaukee in an area that EVERYONE IN BASEBALL could use an upgrade. He has the stuff and the experience that anybody would embrace coming to their the team. If it doesn't work...the end result could be bad just like any move. Also, I highly doubt Milwaukee will be able to "upgrade" at third or short now. That doesn't mean they won't get someone but keep the expectations low.

Kudos for Doug Melvin for doing the unexpected and here's to hoping it works out right!

The All-Hull Team...

As I was riding the moped to work today, I somehow got to thinking about who would be my All-Time All-Star team...The "All-Hull Team"...There is no criteria for the team; just a team that I devised for some reason in my head that I would love to see on the field based on things that don't even make sense to me. I give you my All-Hull team...

C - Dave Nilsson
The first baseball I ever got at a Brewers game was thrown to me by Nilsson. It was the second game of the 1994 season. I went with my Grandpa Norm. During batting practice, my annoying screams were answered in the right field general admission seats. Of course, I had to run into the red seats to get the ball and surprisingly I wasn't booted back into the green seats. I miss County Stadium...It was a great day to be a 12-year old.

1B - Brad Nelson
I had a chance to meet Nelson when I worked in Iowa for 8-months at KLGA Radio in Algona. They don't get much classier than Brad. Nelson came up to the Brewers as a September call-up in 2008 and connected for a couple of doubles. His solid pinch-hitting had earned him a spot on the Playoff Roster. He earned a spot on the 2009 opening day roster but went 0 for 21 and ended up going back to the minors for Seattle and now Texas. Would love to see him get another shot as the 0 for 21 included a handful of robberies and countless hard hit balls.

2B -Dickie Thon
Everyone plays the former Brewer name-drop game...Thon is my go to guy. Great stache also.

SS - Derek Jeter
I don't really care for the guy but he is the face of baseball in my life time...because of that it's hard to keep him off the list. Mad respect for Jeter.

3B - Jeff Cirillo
Anyone who knows me understands this was a no brainier. Favorite ATHLETE (all-sports) of all-time. End of story...

OF - R.J Reynolds
He was my first favorite baseball player...mostly because I had a plethora of his 1989 Topps baseball card and people were willing to trade me more because of how good of a player he was. That favorite player feeling did not last long when I found out he was part of big tobacco.

OF - Bo Jackson
Who didn't love this guy in the late 80's and early 90's? I still think I have my Blue and Black Bo Jackson Poster at my parents house...hopefully that did not go the way of the rummage sale last summer.

OF - Quinton McCracken
For some reason, McCracken always found his way on every team I ever played with/drafted on any baseball video game growing up. His name is Quinton McCracken for goodness sakes...(F.P Santangelo was another name stay on the Hull teams but I ran out of room.)

SP - Joshua Verges
Verges set the Germantown High School single season ERA mark with a 0.00 his Senior Season in 2000. The record did come under protest because Joshua was a reliever but the record stands. After high school, Verges went on to pitch for many adult leagues where he has won various awards and even struck out Don August. I've known him since 3rd grade when we had identical Puffy Paint warm-up sweatshirts for basketball so this is a no-brainer for my team.

Milwaukee Brewers 1st Half Power Rankings

With the Milwaukee Brewers wrapping up the first half of their season Sunday I have taken the liberty of starting a new Blog Segment for every Monday...Player Power Rankings. Here is a look at how they fair for the first half...

#1 - 1B Prince Fielder
Fielder has not only been the MVP of the Milwaukee Brewers, but he is in the conversation for being the MVP of the National League. If Fielder continues on his current pace, he would finish with 39 Homers and 133 RBI. Not bad if he can keep his average around the .300 mark.

#2 - RP John Axford
Before your jaw hits your desk, iphone, droid, or whatever you are reading this on, note that he has converted 20-straight saves after only cashing in on 3 of his first 5 opportunities. If you take out the 6-runs given up in his first 7-games...Axford's ERA would be 1.80. Its at 2.83 which isn't that shabby.

#3 - OF Ryan Braun
Braun has been Braun this year...outside of his power numbers being up a tad, his everything has gone as expected. His presence would have been HUGE the final week before the break when the lack of consistent offense (Monday and Saturday) saw the Crew drop games they MAYBE "should have" won. A healthy Braun will go a long way to determine the Brewers outcome this year.

#4 - SP Shaun Marcum
Because this is based on the entire first half of the season, Marcum goes ahead of Gallardo. I wonder how much his hip injury is really bothering him. None the less, Marcum has wowed everyone who has watched this team. His 3.39 ERA leads Brewers starting pitchers though his 7-3 record doesn't show how well he has pitched. He has only factored in 2-decisions (1-1) in his last 8-starts; Milwaukee has gone 1-7 in those games.

#5 - SP Yovani Gallardo
Every time the Brewers needed to stop the bleeding it seemed like Gallardo was the guy. His numbers aren't spectacular by any means, but his good starts have looked GREAT! His bad starts have also looked bad but unlike Zack Greinke, he has performed the way I expected him too. I think he is primed for a big 2nd half and if the Brewers make the playoffs, he will be the game 1 starter.

#6 - OF Nyjer Morgan/OF Carlos Gomez
They are a platoon, so they get mentioned together. Both of these guys are spark plugs...Nyjer offensively and Gomez defensively. Gomez has won a couple of games with his defense and Morgan has been key to a few comeback wins. I LOVE the platoon moving forward and am looking for a BIG 2nd half from the 2-spot in the order.

#7 - 2B Rickie Weeks
On the surface, its hard to put the All-Star this low...but look at the players ahead of him. Weeks has calmed the storm of "haters" who have questioned his existence in the lead-off spot...His numbers rank among the best in baseball and 2B. I hate to say this, but I would love to see weeks bat third and Braun 5th...move the platoon to first and Hart to 2nd. Just a thought...

#8 - SP Randy Wolf
I have been more than impressed with Randy Wolf as a starter this season. Name a better #4 starter (who isn't injured) in baseball? I don't think you can. Wolf and Chris Narveson may be the key to the second half. If they can keep up the pace, or even 90% of it, the Brewers will be in the mix.

#9 - SP Chris Narveson
SEE Randy Wolf but insert #5 starter...Narveson has been SUPERB!

#10 - RP Kameron Loe
Yes, Loe. He has gone through a couple of bad stretches and has had a few bad games...what reliever in baseball hasn't? His good stretches have been great and overlooked. His 2-7 record is a bit of an oversight...5 of the losses have been in games the offense has scored 3-runs or less. Yes, his ERA is high as well, but 12 of his 22 earned runs came in 3 games...he has given up runs in 12 of 46 outings...that means, 74% of the time he has pitched, he hasn't given up a run. Not as bad as it looks just staring at his numbers.

Just like every list, this is subjective. Who did I miss? Who did I overrate and underrate? Would love to hear your feedback!
